‘Happy New Year!’ we say to those around us at midnight and in the first phone calls and emails once back to work. A few days off to relax and then we step fully into the new year and continue with our professional roles. But how have we stepped in to 2024? With positive energy and confidence or with trepidation and caution? Judging by initial contact with MFA members, it has been a stressful and complicated couple of weeks already. Add a regional conflict and significant alteration to shipping routes, bunkering plans and freight costs to the new EU Allowances that came in to play January 1st, and it is no surprise companies are already wondering where the word ‘Happy’ quite fits in to those midnight good wishes.
If you are looking to tread a smooth and assured path this year, then you may have to seek greater collaboration. Talk to other stakeholders and focus on where exactly your business needs to develop and make changes. This is a year of uncertainty and unprecedented challenges. They need not be faced alone. You can walk away from the challenges of 2024, or positively into it and set a solid foundation for the years ahead.
