GC-MS stands for Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. We all knew that, right? I doubt it. Fading memories of school chemistry lessons backed up by more recent education and instruction on marine fuels and some of the basic testing methods is probably true for the majority in the bunker industry. So, when something new comes along, we have to ensure we apply focussed minds and spend time learning what may appear grossly complicated information but is actually critical for our business and its risk exposure.

There are a great many articles in the media and on websites discussing GC-MS. You do not have to read too many before realising there are repeating themes. A lack of international standards for testing methodology and limits set. How to pinpoint the cause of contaminants in fuel? How to extract the evidence in a claim? How to interpret clause 5 of the ISO standards? Finally, the need for cross-industry collaboration.

The MFA is willing to address the topic with its members and professional expert Partners. These are testing times and we will work with our bunker suppliers and sellers in the membership to listen to their experiences and begin a programme of guidance around GC-MS issues.
